Red Alder (Alnus rubra)
Red alder is a fast-growing deciduous tree that commonly colonizes disturbed and riparian areas. It plays a key role in forest succession and soil development, particularly in young or recently disturbed landscapes.

Ecological Role
Red alder fixes atmospheric nitrogen through symbiosis with soil bacteria, enriching soils for subsequent plant communities. It improves stream habitat through leaf litter inputs and shading. Alder often prepares sites for longer-lived conifers.
