Finding true morels can be tricky, especially with dangerous lookalikes in the mix. Here's how to safely identify them:

Cap Texture: Deep, pitted ridges and ridges create a sponge-like or honeycomb appearance.
Color: Ranges from creamy yellow to deep brown depending on age and species.
Cap Attachment: The cap is attached directly to the stem at its base — not hanging freely like some lookalikes.
Hollow Inside: When sliced vertically, both cap and stem are completely hollow.
Habitat: Look around dead or dying trees (especially elm, ash, cottonwood, and apple), in recently burned areas, or moist forested slopes.
Season: Late March through May in the Pacific Northwest, but exact timing varies by elevation and temperature.

🛑 Caution: Avoid false morels (e.g. Gyromitra spp.) which can be toxic. They often have wrinkled or lobed caps (not pitted) and may not be fully hollow.
